IATO Delegation Meets Manipur Governor to Address Key Tourism Challenges and Strengthen Growth Opportunities

A senior team from the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) met the Governor of Manipur, H.E. Ajay Kumar Bhalla, at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday to discuss pressing issues impacting the state’s tourism sector and explore ways to boost Manipur’s visibility in national and international markets.

The delegation was headed by Mr. Ravi Gosain, President of IATO, accompanied by Mr. Rajiv Mehra, Immediate Past President, Mr. Radhakrishna Sharma, IATO State In-charge for Manipur, and Mr. E.B. Blah, IATO State In-charge for Meghalaya.

Key Concerns Raised

During the discussion, IATO representatives highlighted several obstacles that continue to restrict Manipur’s tourism potential. A major issue raised was the complexity of the Protected Area Permit (PAP) procedures for foreign tourists, which, according to the delegation, remains a significant deterrent for international travel companies and visitors.

They also emphasised the need for:

  • Improved air connectivity to enhance accessibility

  • Upgraded infrastructure, particularly around major tourist circuits

  • Consistent marketing efforts to showcase Manipur’s cultural, natural and adventure offerings globally

The delegation stressed that easing travel restrictions and improving connectivity would not only encourage tourist inflow but also contribute to long-term socio-economic growth for local communities.

IATO’s Commitment to Supporting Manipur

IATO assured the Governor that the association is ready to collaborate closely with state authorities to elevate Manipur’s tourism profile. This includes participation in international travel exhibitions, strategic promotional campaigns, and leveraging IATO’s extensive network of domestic and global tour operators.

Governor’s Response

Governor Bhalla welcomed the delegation’s recommendations, acknowledging the importance of the tourism sector in fostering regional development and stability. He expressed willingness to support initiatives that could accelerate Manipur’s emergence as a prominent destination in India’s Northeast.

Engagement at the 3rd Manipur Tourism Congress

Prior to the Raj Bhavan meeting, Mr. Gosain and Mr. Mehra attended the 3rd Manipur Tourism Congress on November 26, organised by Manipur Tourism.

Speaking on the panel titled “Partnership for Progress,” Mr. Gosain underscored the importance of coordinated efforts between:

  • Government bodies

  • Industry associations

  • Private-sector stakeholders

He reiterated IATO’s commitment to helping emerging destinations like Manipur gain wider recognition among global travellers, stressing that collaborative action is essential for ensuring sustainable tourism growth.
